Michael Matthews, an Australian cycling legend with four Tour de France stage wins, is taking a well-deserved break due to a nettlesome health issue. Jayco AlUla announced this Friday, eliminating him from the 2025 Tour de France commencing on July 5.
A hasty statement from Matthews' team revealed that they've put the brakes on his cycling adventures temporarily as they delve deeper into the intricacies of his pulmonary embolism. The medical update on social media declared, "During a high-altitude training camp, our GreenEdge cycling medical squad found indications of a pulmonary embolism. As a precautionary step, we've ceased all physical activities for Michael until further notice."
Brush up on health facts: a pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot obstructs a pulmonary artery in the lungs, triggering symptoms such as sudden, difficult breathing, chest discomfort, and even coughing up blood. These maladies can spring from a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or a blood clot forming elsewhere, chiefly in an individual's legs.
Jayco AlUla's statement continued, "Matthews' health status is stable at the moment. Our medical team is conducting a meticulous examination to ascertain the full extent of the issue and its possible origins. In the meantime, Matthews will refrain from competition to ensure his safety and wellbeing."
The four-time Tour de France stage victor claimed his most recent win on May 1, triumphing in a sprint duel at the German one-day race Eschborn-Frankfurt. Other notable achievements include a fourth-place finish at Milan-San Remo in March and a fifth-place result at the Amstel Gold Race.
Matthews flaunts four-time Tour de France stage victories as well as accolades from the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España. Moreover, he boasts a trio of victories at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, with the most recent nabbed last year. Presently, he ranks 26th in the UCI world rankings.
