Airline crew member, under the influence of drugs, removes clothing in aircraft bathroom, escapes jail sentence
In a shocking incident that took place in May, Haden Pentecost, a former British Airways flight attendant, was found naked and under the influence of drugs in a plane toilet during a flight from San Francisco to London Heathrow. Pentecost's bizarre behavior caused a 'huge distraction' for the captain and crew, but thankfully, no passengers were aware of his condition. According to reports, he had ingested a substance stronger than in previous instances, leading to his erratic behavior. Before the flight, Pentecost claimed to be suffering from stomach cramps. His colleagues found him disheveled, pale, sweaty, and erratic before the flight. Despite his condition, he failed to complete pre-flight safety checks, causing a significant inconvenience. During the flight, Pentecost locked himself in a bathroom and emerged naked. A colleague struggled to make sense of his behavior, and he was found to have dilated pupils, was unable to answer basic questions, and drank 15 to 20 bottles of water during the flight. The captain was alerted and called for medical professionals on board. A blood sample later showed Pentecost had methamphetamine and amphetamine in his system, and he was later dismissed from his job. Pentecost was charged with performing an aviation function while impaired by drugs at Isleworth Crown Court. In court, he expressed fear of losing his liberty and shame at the situation he had brought upon himself. Judge Hannah Duncan reduced Pentecost's sentence from 12 months to six months due to his early plea. He was given a six-month suspended prison sentence, 80 hours of unpaid work, and ordered to pay £150 in costs. Pentecost, who is teetotal, has vowed never to take drugs again. If he had not reported for the flight, he would not have been convicted of the offence. His colleagues had to manage a 10-and-a-half-hour flight without his assistance. Pentecost lost his career as a British Airways flight attendant due to this incident. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers and consequences of drug use, especially in a professional setting where safety is paramount.
