In July 2024, 37 participants took part in a multi-day experiment involving brain games to associate positive and negative images.

Participants first underwent an evening of brain training, pairing nonsense words with negative images. After a night of sleep to naturally strengthen the memories, they underwent another round of brain games the next day. This time, they were prompted to associate half of the nonsense words with positive images in an effort to counteract the negative associations.

While they slept, the researchers monitored their brain activity with electroencephalography (EEG), a technique used to track even the slowest delta waves during sleep studies. For several days following the night of memory reactivation, the participants took questionnaires and completed tasks to evaluate their memory recall abilities. The study's results showed that participants were more likely to have positive associations with the nonsense words mixed with negative ones.

Though more research is needed, the study's authors suggest that this approach could offer new insights useful in the treatment of mental disorders rooted in traumatic or pathological memories.
