Back Pain Surge Among Young Students: Initiatives Promote Ergonomic Backpacks and Movement

Alarmingly, young students are increasingly battling back pain, with those aged 18 to 29 spending excessive time sitting, often leading to health issues. Initiatives are underway to promote back health in schools, and ergonomic backpacks are emerging as a solution.

Students aged 18 to 29 spend around 11 extra hours sitting on weekdays compared to other age groups. This prolonged sitting reduces nutrient supply to discs and promotes shoulder and neck tension. Early warning signs of an unbalanced lifestyle include a tense neck, lower back pain, and headaches. To combat this, the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry and partners are focusing on back health in schools, offering teacher resources and pilot projects for safe road traffic participation.

Ergonomic backpacks are proving beneficial. The Healthy Back Campaign (AGR) e.V. certifies backpacks that meet specific back-friendly criteria, ensuring even weight distribution and closeness to the body. A special bike backpack can also help by keeping weight stable during movement. Regular movement breaks, small routines, and activities like using stairs, walking, and active leisure time can further strengthen the back.

With back pain on the rise among young students, initiatives are promoting back health in schools. Ergonomic backpacks, certified by the AGR, and regular movement are key solutions. By adopting these measures, students can maintain a healthier back even with extended sitting.
