Basement fire leaves Sendling's residential building unlivable
In the heart of Munich, on the chilly evening of November 21, 2024, a sudden emergency unfolded at Engelhardstraße. A basement fire broke out in a residential building, sending shockwaves through the community.
As the flames began to rise, two teams from the Munich Fire Department sprang into action. Armed with breathing apparatus, they bravely entered the smoke-filled dwelling to combat the blaze and rescue any trapped residents.
The fiery spectacle was a sight to behold, with flames shooting out of a basement window and the building enveloped in thick smoke. The street in front of the building had to be dug up due to the gas situation, adding to the chaos of the scene.
In the smoky stairwell, an elderly woman was found and successfully rescued using a smoke hood. Her safety was a relief for all involved, as the police had already initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The entire building had to be evacuated immediately due to an increased gas concentration in the basement. The affected residents were accommodated in a large rescue vehicle and a nearby guest house for the duration of the work.
Once the fire was brought under control using a hose reel, the building was ventilated using a high-performance fan to clear the smoke. However, the extent of the property damage caused by the fire is not yet known to the fire department.
The residential building at Engelhardstraße is currently uninhabitable, leaving its residents in a state of uncertainty. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the 'fire cause investigator' (Brandursachenermittler), who can be a criminal police investigator or a private expert/valuer with scientific or technical training.
