Mothers in Bavaria are exhibiting a shift towards financial independence, according to figures from the microcensus, reported by the State Office of Statistics. The data indicates that in 2021, only 21% of mothers aged 20 and over in partnerships depended primarily on parents or partners for living expenses, compared to 37% in 2009.
Conversely, the proportion of mothers relying on their own income has increased from 55% in 2009 to 66% in 2021. Parental leave has become the main source of income for 8% of mothers, a nearly doubling since 2009.
There has been little change in fathers' financial dependency over the past 15 years. In 2021, 93% of fathers financed their living expenses primarily from their own income, unchanged from 2009. The State Office reports that there are approximately 1.1 million couples in Bavaria with mothers and fathers aged 20 and over and minor children. No specific figures for same-sex couples were provided by the State Office.
The level of financial independence among mothers increases with the age of their children. When children are under six years old, only 53% of mothers finance their living expenses primarily themselves. With children in primary school, this figure rises to 75%, and with children aged 12 to 17, it reaches 79%. The full-time employment rate also increases with the age of the children.
The State Office of Statistics did not provide comment on the reasons for this development, although it is likely that changes in social norms, expanded childcare options, and the rise of home office work may have played a role.
The increased financial independence among mothers in Bavaria could be influenced by factors such as parental leave policies, childcare availability, home office options, economic opportunities, and cultural shifts supporting working mothers.
