Baylor Launches HealthyBearsTXT: Texting Campaign Boosts Student Well-being
Baylor University has launched HealthyBearsTXT, a health promotion texting campaign aimed at encouraging students to prioritize their well-being. The project, led by Associate Professor of Communication Jessica Ford, sends tailored messages to nearly 1,000 campus members each week, covering a range of health topics.
HealthyBearsTXT covers eight key areas, including sleep, spiritual wellness, resilience, physical activity, nutrition, and anxiety. Each text message is drafted by students but incorporates research-backed insights from faculty and staff, ensuring relevance to the Baylor community. Students receive two to three messages per week, tailored to the time of year and academic calendar.
The campaign aims to influence student behaviors and increase awareness and use of campus health and well-being resources. It uses Mosio for text distribution and was initially funded by the Parent Advisory Council, which also supported a graduate student researcher position.
Since its launch, HealthyBearsTXT has reached nearly 1,000 students, faculty, and staff each week. Future plans include expanding the campaign to graduate students, who face unique health challenges. By promoting self-care and health awareness, the campaign seeks to foster a healthier, more resilient Baylor community.
