Bremen initates a novel initiative to combat the nursing shortage crisis

The Paritätisches Bildungswerk Bremen has announced a new orientation course for long-term care personnel in Bremen-Nord, set to begin on October 21, 2022. This project, part of the existing "Paths to Employment" initiative, aims to provide a low-threshold entry and qualification opportunities for people with limited access to the care sector.

The course is designed to cater to individuals with an interest in care or related professions such as household or kitchen. Particularly, it targets people with a migration background or a non-German educational background, and those from disadvantaged areas. A minimum German level of A2 is required for participation.

The comprehensive course includes training, practical days with employers, specialist language promotion, coaching, a job exchange, and job interviews. The goal is to achieve social security-covered employment for participants, and the project aims to provide local, low-threshold entry into care for around 20 individuals.

The course offers an insight into tasks of ambulatory and stationary geriatric care and other working areas in the care context. Participants will be able to prepare meals, accompany residents, help with low care needs, and assist care professionals.

The project involves collaboration with various organizations, including the District Office Bremen-Nord (Bezirksamt Bremen-Nord), the Care and Health Office (Fachamt Pflege und Gesundheit), the Bremen-Nord care coordination office (Pflegenetzwerk Bremen-Nord), and numerous nursing care service providers in the Bremen-Nord region.

Approximately six million euros are available for the project until mid-2025. The total amount allocated for the course specifically runs until mid-2025 is approximately 300,000 euros. This funding covers the development and implementation of the course, designed to improve long-term care orientation for professionals and caregivers in the Bremen-Nord area.

Dr. Claudia Schilling, spokesperson for the project, states that the project aims to alleviate staff shortages in care facilities and bring needed workers into the sector. The course is particularly aimed at people with a migration background or a non-German educational background, and it is tailored to the care sector, offering social security-covered employment and qualification up to the level of a care professional.

The new orientation course for long-term care in Bremen-Nord is a significant step towards addressing the ongoing staff shortages in the care sector and providing opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  1. The course, held within the "Paths to Employment" initiative by Paritätisches Bildungswerk Bremen, aims to equip participants with health-and-wellness knowledge relevant to the care sector, including fitness-and-exercise, nutrition, and therapies-and-treatments.
  2. In October 2022, the course offers a low-threshold entry for people with limited access to the care sector, specifically targeting individuals from migrant, disadvantaged, or non-German educational backgrounds.
  3. This initiative fosters workforce wellness and social security by preparing participants for jobs in the care sector, ensuring eligible employment under Medicare.
  4. The comprehensive nature of the course includes practical training, employer interactions, language promotion, coaching, job exchanges, and job interviews, ultimately providing a chance for around 20 individuals to gain a care professional qualification.
