Casio's AI-Powered Pet Offers a Unique (and Potentially Unnerving) Approach to Wellness Accessories

In a bid to address the growing mental health concerns in the United States, Casio is introducing a unique and charming device named Moflin. This palm-sized, fluffy companion, marketed as a wellness accessory and emotional support device, is set to be available for purchase exclusively online starting October 1 for $429.

Moflin's design is inspired by small animals but not modeled after any specific one, giving it a distinct and endearing appearance. Its charging station is shaped like a resting nest, adding to its comforting and homely aesthetic.

The technology and development licenses for Moflin's production were provided by Casio, with the developer being Sony. Moflin is equipped with AI-powered emotional behavior technology that allows it to coo, simulate breathing, and show gestures of attachment. It can even exhibit emotional states such as crankiness, loneliness, or anxiety, depending on its environment.

Moflin's developers aim for comfort rather than a cure for depression or loneliness. They believe that Moflin, with its ability to respond to voices, perform small movements when someone is nearby, and react with animal-like responses that mimic emotions like joy, sadness, or curiosity, can provide a source of comfort and companionship in daily life.

The U.S. debut of Moflin coincides with historically high mental health concerns, with more than 18% of adults reporting current depression and 21% reporting significant loneliness. Nearly three in 10 young adults (ages 18 to 29) report feeling significantly lonely.

The MofLife app allows owners to check on Moflin's emotional state, discover new traits, view interaction journals, update software, and name their companion. This app further enhances the bond between the owner and Moflin, making it a truly personal and unique experience.

Casio plans to commercialize Moflin, with the first international launch in November 2024, followed by expansion to the U.S. market in the fall of the same year. This broader plan for international commercialization is part of Casio's commitment to making Moflin a quiet companion who lifts spirits in daily life, as stated by Erina Ichikawa, a Casio developer. If Moflin achieves this goal, it would indeed make them happy.

Moflin found initial success through a viral crowdfunding campaign in Japan, and it is now poised to bring comfort and companionship to many more people in the United States and beyond.
