Cave discovery in Klutertberg, North Rhine: now believed to be the longest

Cavern discovery in Klutertberg now boasts as the longest in North Rhine region.

The Kluterthöhle cave system, nestled within the picturesque town of Ennepetal, has been unveiled as the longest cave network in North Rhine-Westphalia, stretching for nearly 8.7 kilometers. This extensive system, part of the larger Klutert Mountain cave system, boasts approximately 300 corridors, making it one of the significant cave systems in the region.

The Kluterthöhle's history remains shrouded in mystery, with specific records of its discovery or initial exploration hard to come by. Caves in this area are believed to have been formed over millions of years through geological processes, such as the dissolution of soluble rocks like limestone or dolomite by acidic water.

Exploration of such extensive cave systems like the Kluterthöhle requires specialized equipment and knowledge of cave navigation. The process can be quite challenging, as proven by the 150-year search for a connection between the Kluterthöhle and the Bismarck cave, which was finally discovered in 2024 by researchers from the Arbeitskreis Kluterthöhle.

Stefan Voigt, cave researcher and Arbeitskreis chairman, recalled thinking he knew every stone on the Kluterberg by its first name. Voigt expressed excitement about the discovery, calling it "spectacular." Navigating through "extremely muddy connections," the four researchers managed to find the connecting passage, significantly increasing the length of the Kluterthöhle system.

The newly discovered connection links the Bismarck and Kluterthöhle caves, making the Kluterthöhle the longest cave in North Rhine-Westphalia. Parts of the Kluterthöhle are open to tourists, but the hard-to-reach sections remain off-limits due to their challenging nature.

The city of Ennepetal and the Arbeitskreis Kluterthöhle announced the new length of the cave system, with plans to inform the public about this discovery together with the mayor on Monday. The Bismarck cave, reserved for experienced cave researchers, continues to intrigue explorers, adding to the region's allure for both tourists and scientists alike.

For a comprehensive understanding of the historical exploration and current conservation status of the Kluterthöhle system, consulting local historical records or contacting regional speleological societies would be beneficial.

  1. The discovery of connections between caves like the Bismarck and the Kluterthöhle can further our understanding of environmental-science, especially the geological processes that formed these caves over millions of years.
  2. As the Kluterthöhle is not only a significant science and health-and-wellness attraction for tourists but also a unique environmental-science research site, it's essential to prioritize its conservation for future generations.
