Champion of SEA Games Skateboarding contest pleads for financial aid for upcoming knee surgery
Christiana Means, the gold medal-winning skateboarder from the 30th SEA Games in Manila, is seeking financial assistance for a knee surgery that could save her career.
Means, who won gold in the women's park event, two silvers in women's street and game of skate, has been dealing with a potentially career-ending injury for the past nine months. The injury, which started while skating in Spain, has since been diagnosed as a torn meniscus, a badly sprained MCL, and a failed ACL graft that is tearing.
In a recent MRI, no functioning ACL was found, along with multiple meniscus tears and ongoing MCL damage. Without surgery, Means risks permanent damage that could prevent her from walking normally.
Means initially believed her injury could be overcome with rest, physical therapy, and strength training. However, after months of seeking insurance coverage and exhausting all personal and insurance options, providers refused to cover pre-existing injuries caused by skateboarding.
The situation has left Means at a financial and emotional wall. She has expressed that it isn't easy to ask for financial assistance, but she is seeking help to cover the surgical costs and post-operative rehabilitation.
Means has launched a GoFundMe campaign titled "Help Christiana Get ACL Surgery." The campaign, created after she discovered she needed ACL reconstruction, has been shared on her Instagram account and has received widespread attention.
