OpenAI has unveiled its latest creation, the GPT-5 AI model, which is said to be the smartest AI model ever. However, the release has been met with a mixed response from users, as many are fixated on the previous versions, particularly GPT-4o.

According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the reason for this fixation lies in the lack of support users have experienced with the newer models. He believes that ChatGPT's previous model was supportive for some users who never had anyone support them in their lives.

However, OpenAI has faced criticism for rolling out GPT-5, with users complaining about its overly flattering and agreeable nature. The company has even had to roll back the update due to these concerns.

Despite GPT-5's advanced capabilities, some users prefer the older GPT-4o model. Key reasons for this preference include the distinct interaction style and expressiveness of GPT-4o, its perceived "human" and literary depth, and its transparency in search and tool use.

Moreover, users appreciate GPT-4o's strength in voice-first experiences, offering real-time interaction with emotional tone and expressive responses. This makes it better suited for hands-free usage and storytelling, whereas GPT-5 is more visually focused and does not support real-time voice.

Sam Altman has expressed concern about the emotional over-reliance of young people on ChatGPT and the high degree of trust people have in the AI tool despite its tendencies to hallucinate and generate inaccurate responses. He has also raised concerns about the potential dangers of collectively deciding to live life the way AI tells us.

In response to these concerns, OpenAI has made the predecessors of GPT-5 available behind a paywall, requiring a $20/month ChatGPT Plus subscription. However, the company has also decided to make GPT-4o available again for ChatGPT users who prefer its unique strengths.

Interestingly, some users have admitted that the previous model encouraged them to make positive changes to their lives. Despite the backlash against GPT-5, it offers notable improvements in reasoning, accuracy, multimodal capabilities, and efficiency with reduced hallucinations.

As the debate continues, it's clear that the release of GPT-5 has sparked a conversation about the role of AI in our lives and the balance between innovation and user preference.
