Combining Thyroid Medication and Milk Can Cause Compatibility Issues

In the latest issue of "Diabetes Advisor" (Issue 8/2025), the focus is on the interaction between Levothyroxin and certain common foods, particularly dairy products and coffee.

Levothyroxin, a synthetic thyroid hormone used to manage hypothyroidism, can experience decreased absorption when consumed with certain substances. Hypothyroidism, a condition characterised by symptoms such as fatigue, lack of drive, constipation, cold sensitivity, and weight gain, can be exacerbated if the medication is not properly absorbed.

One such substance is calcium, found in dairy products like quark, yogurt, cheese, or kefir. Consuming these immediately after taking Levothyroxin can lead to interactions, as calcium can form an insoluble compound with the medication in the stomach, making it harder for the body to absorb the medication. To avoid this, it's advisable to wait at least four hours after taking Levothyroxin before consuming dairy products or calcium-rich foods.

Coffee is another substance that can interfere with the body's absorption of Levothyroxin. It's recommended to wait at least 30 to 60 minutes after taking Levothyroxine before drinking coffee. This waiting period helps ensure optimal absorption and efficacy of the medication.

Pharmacist Tabea Patz advises taking Levothyroxin tablets with a glass of still tap water half an hour before breakfast. This timing ensures optimal absorption, as the medication is typically advised to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 to 60 minutes before food or drink.

It's crucial to discuss any concerns about eating habits and their potential impact on thyroid tablet effectiveness with a doctor. Inadequate Levothyroxin absorption can lead to the reappearance of hypothyroidism symptoms, such as lack of drive and cold sensitivity.

By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can ensure they are getting the most out of their Levothyroxin treatment, managing their hypothyroidism effectively, and reducing the risk of symptoms reoccurring.
