Comparing access to MEDLINE: adjusting perspectives between Dialog and PubMed.
In the realm of medical research, the quest for accurate and comprehensive information is paramount. Two leading platforms, Dialog Solutions and PubMed, are often at the forefront of this pursuit.
Recently, a study comparing these platforms was conducted, shedding light on their respective strengths and similarities. The study, detailed in the Dialog scholar strategy, was composed of 13 separate searches (S1-S13).
Dialog Solutions offers a simplified research process in various ways. For instance, it streamlines the search process by allowing searches to be run simultaneously in multiple databases, including Embase, Biosis, and SciSearch. This feature provides a broader scope for research, compared to PubMed's single-database approach.
However, PubMed does have its advantages. The platform was found to explode terms 'behind the scenes', such as with clinical trials[publication type] and RHEUMATISM. To mitigate this issue, the search was restricted to Rheumatic Diseases [Mesh:noexp] in PubMed.
The comparison between Dialog MEDLINE and PubMed revealed comparable retrieval and sensitivity. The table included terms related to rheumatoid arthritis, Caplan Syndrome, Felty Syndrome, Rheumatoid Nodule, Still's Disease, Rheumatic Diseases, Methotrexate, and clinical trials. Additionally, the table also included search terms specific to Dialog, such as MESH.EXACT and pd(20120101-20200203).
It's important to note that this study compared Dialog MEDLINE and PubMed, with no other specific databases mentioned for testing the comparability of both platforms in terms of retrieval and sensitivity.
In 2011, a systematic review compared PubMed's efficiency to Ovid-MEDLINE for searching MEDLINE, finding PubMed slightly more sensitive for relevant articles. Conversely, the article "PubMed had a higher sensitivity than Ovid-MEDLINE in the search for systematic reviews" was published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology in 2011 (Katchamart et al., 2011).
Moreover, Dialog offers an advantage over PubMed as it automatically removes duplicate articles, saving time and increasing efficiency. The Dialog scholar strategy returned a total of 623 results when combined with Methotrexate search terms, and further limited to children aged 18 or younger and a publication date range of Jan 1, 2012 to Feb 3, 2020, it returned a total of 46 results.
Under new EU regulations for medical devices, robust systematic searches run within multiple databases are required. In this context, Dialog Solutions emerges as a valuable tool for medical researchers, offering a streamlined and efficient approach to research.
