Transmission

Rotavirus, on the other hand, spreads mainly through the fecal-oral route, by contact with contaminated hands, surfaces, and objects or ingestion of contaminated food and water. It is especially prevalent in young children due to hand-to-mouth behavior after touching contaminated items.

Symptoms

Norovirus symptoms typically begin 12 to 48 hours after exposure and last 1 to 3 days. Symptoms include sudden onset of vomiting and watery, non-bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pain, nausea, and occasionally muscle aches, headaches, and low-grade fever. These symptoms occur in both adults and children, with norovirus being notably contagious.

Rotavirus symptoms are more common and severe in children, especially under age 5. Children often experience fever and vomiting (usually the first symptoms) followed by watery diarrhea lasting up to a week or longer before stool patterns normalize. In adults, rotavirus infections are usually mild or asymptomatic.

Prevention Strategies

For norovirus, good hand hygiene with soap and water is critical, especially after using the toilet and before eating or handling food. Cleaning and disinfecting contaminated surfaces are essential since norovirus can persist on surfaces. Avoiding contaminated food and water and isolating infected individuals can reduce spread.

Rotavirus prevention primarily involves vaccination, which has significantly reduced infection rates in children under five since its introduction. Maintaining good hygiene practices such as handwashing and cleaning of surfaces helps limit fecal-oral transmission. Supportive care at home is typical, with medical attention for severe cases.

For rotavirus specifically, receiving a rotavirus vaccine is the most effective form of prevention, and infants can have the vaccine when they are 6-24 weeks old.
