competitor in Tour de France's General Classification receives oxygen after stage 16 ends
In a dramatic turn of events during the Tour de France, Norwegian cyclist Tobias Halland Johannessen has been given the green light to continue racing after a medical scare during stage 16. The Uno-X Mobility rider, who has been one of the General Classification (GC) revelations at this year's event, collapsed due to severe stomach cramps during the final kilometers of the stage at Mont Ventoux.
Johannessen was promptly attended to by race doctors, who administered oxygen and intravenous saline. He was then transported to a local hospital for thorough tests, including ultrasound, x-rays, blood tests, and ECGs. The results of these tests have shown no abnormalities, much to the relief of the cycling community.
The 25-year-old cyclist, currently in 8th place on the general classification, is reported to be feeling much better and hopes to continue racing. Uno-X Mobility team manager Thor Hushovd confirmed that Johannessen is expected to start stage 17.
Johannessen's climb through the GC ranks has been impressive over the past 10 days. He found his stride in the mountains, taking 4th place on stage 12 to Hautacam. Despite his issues on stage 16, he remains in 8th place on the general classification, 17 minutes and 1 second down on Tadej Pogacar.
Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) is now less than a minute behind Johannessen on the general classification, making the competition for the top spots even more intense. The Uno-X team will continue to monitor any issues that may arise and make decisions accordingly.
Johannessen, a former winner of the Tour de l'Avenir, finished 28th on Mont Ventoux during stage 16. With his resilience and determination, he is set to continue his fight in the remaining stages of the Tour de France.
