New Critical Care Tower at UNM Hospital Set to Open This Fall
The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is set to expand its critical care capabilities with the opening of a new Critical Care Tower this fall. The state-of-the-art facility, completed in early August 2025, will provide world-class critical care close to home for New Mexicans, eliminating the need for residents to travel long distances for critical treatment.
The new tower features 75 beds and is equipped with advanced diagnostic equipment like CT scanners and MRIs, both of which are firsts for the facility. It also includes dialysis units integrated within the critical care setting, a comprehensive layout housing adult Intensive Care Units, Emergency Department, and radiology services together for streamlined care, and patient-centered spaces designed to enhance the patient experience and care quality.
The expansion will add 24 intensive care beds, two new operating rooms, and a new adult emergency department to the hospital. This increase in capacity is expected to boost the hospital's ability to care for its sickest patients.
Staff training is underway to familiarize them with the new layout to ensure smooth patient care transitions. The expansion is a significant milestone toward delivering advanced healthcare services to the community.
