A cranial CT scan, also known as a CAT scan, is a vital diagnostic tool used to examine the internal structures of the head. It's often ordered by specialists such as neurologists, neurosurgeons, and radiologists, or emergency physicians in acute cases. Other specialists like otolaryngologists or maxillofacial surgeons may also request it if relevant to their field.
A cranial CT scan uses a series of X-rays, combined by a computer, to create detailed images of the head. These images can reveal a wide range of conditions, from skull abnormalities and blood vessel issues to brain atrophy, birth defects, aneurysms, hemorrhages, hydrocephalus, infections, injuries, strokes, and tumors.
The procedure is typically suggested to investigate symptoms involving the nervous system, such as head injury, fainting, headache, seizures, behavioral changes, hearing or vision loss, muscle weakness, speech difficulty, or difficulty swallowing.
