Deion Sanders reveals his battle with bladder cancer yet remains committed to coaching the Colorado Buffaloes this season
Deion Sanders Declared Cancer-Free and Set to Coach University of Colorado Football Team
Deion Sanders, the renowned football coach at the University of Colorado, has been declared cancer-free following a successful robotic bladder removal surgery earlier this year. The surgery, which included the construction of a new bladder from a section of his intestines, was carried out due to an aggressive form of bladder cancer that was discovered during a routine CT scan.
Sanders, who has had 14 surgeries since 2021, remained upbeat throughout his treatment process. He shared his health update in a press conference, expressing his strong motivation to continue coaching the Colorado Buffaloes this fall. The team is set to kick off the season on Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech at Folsom Field.
The cancer had not spread, as indicated by tests on his lymph nodes. Sanders' oncologist, Dr. Kukreja, considers him cured. The coach returned to campus last week and announced on social media that he is feeling great.
Sanders' son, Shedeur Sanders, was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, and another son, Shilo, is in camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite missing football camps in Boulder this summer due to his illness, Sanders is determined to lead his team this season.
Randy Moss, another Pro Football Hall of Famer, reached out to Sanders during his cancer diagnosis, offering support and encouragement. A video of Sanders' first meeting with the team after his return was posted by the "Well Off Media" production crew on YouTube.
Sanders kept his cancer fight private, joking about drafting a will as a chance to rank his kids. He lost about 25 pounds during his treatment but is now back to his usual self. Sanders uses Depend due to incontinence issues caused by his surgery.
This positive outcome and ongoing commitment to coaching demonstrate both Sanders' medical recovery and professional resilience. Sanders signed a contract extension through the 2029 season in March, showing his commitment to the University of Colorado. Sanders' return to the field is a testament to his spirit and determination, inspiring many with his courage and perseverance.
