Democrats express concern over Biden's health condition

In the final years of his presidency, concerns about U.S. President Joe Biden's health and fitness have surfaced among Democratic party members. According to a new book by American journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, Biden has shown moments of confusion, forgetfulness, and disorientation, especially during the last two years of his term.

The authors' account portrays a series of shocking incidents involving Biden's memory lapses, such as instances where he couldn't recall the names of his closest advisers, delivered incoherent speeches, and lost his train of thought. These episodes, as reported in "Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again," were not publicly disclosed, as Biden was shielded from the media to conceal the extent of his decline.

Democratic lawmakers, White House staff members, cabinet officials, and party donors expressed dismay and concern as they witnessed Biden's mental and physical deterioration, with some questioning whether the president was prepared for a national emergency. Despite these concerns, Biden embarked on a campaign for re-election, an effort that many within his circle attempted to halt due to his condition.

The book recounts a series of embarrassing moments for Biden during the 2024 presidential campaign, such as his dismal performance in a debate against Donald Trump that left the public questioning his cognitive abilities. Even former President Trump expressed sympathy for Biden upon learning about his cancer diagnosis, though the debate about Biden's fitness for office remains ongoing.

Vice President JD Vance recently added fuel to the debate, stating that Biden should NOT run for re-election in light of his health concerns. Vance went on to say, "If you're not healthy enough, you shouldn't do the job."

In a recording obtained by Axios, special counsel Robert Hur described Biden as "a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with poor memory." The debate over Biden's decision to run for re-election persists, with critics highlighting his age and supposed mental decline as reasons for stepping down, while supporters maintain that he has proven to be an effective president despite his advanced age.

Biden's cancer diagnosis, announced in a statement from his office on Sunday, generated widespread sympathy, even from Trump, who wished Biden a speedy recovery. The book also suggests that key members of Biden's inner circle, including his wife, son, and long-time advisers, may have been withholding information from him about his poor reelection prospects.

The authors base their account on more than 200 interviews with Democratic insiders conducted after the 2024 election. The book was published on Tuesday.
