Founded 62 years ago in New York, the company filed for bankruptcy protection under U.S. law towards the end of last week due to towering debts. Notably, the company's website maintains operations will continue for the time being.
However, the financial figures tell a different story. Since 2018, the company's annual revenue has plummeted by half to $786 million. Weight Watchers' business strategy revolved around commercializing the self-help group principle. Overweight individuals paid subscription fees to attend weekly meetings with others in similar situations, while a program encouraged members to count points when eating to encourage healthier eating habits. The company also profited from selling special diet foods or licensing them.
Lately, though, it appears that potential customers are no longerawed by group gatherings and dietary control. Moreover, societal attitudes toward beauty standards and body norms have undergone a radical shift. In response, Weight Watchers attempted to stay competitive by developing fitness apps, telemedicine programs, and more. Yet, their offerings fared poorly compared to dozens of competitors in the market.
The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated this descent. In the midst of the pandemic, Weight Watchers shed a significant portion of its coaching staff, and the move away from in-person gatherings was intensified.
Oprah Winfrey: From Weight Watchers to Weight Loss Injections
Even the face of Weight Watchers herself couldn't halt their downfall. Oprah Winfrey joined the company in 2015, becoming a prominent voice and acquiring 10% of shares, along with a board position. Yet, she departed in 2024, selling off her depreciated shares with a donation of the earnings. Later, Winfrey admitted to trusting weight loss injections for weight loss.
The swift ascension of these medications in the past couple of years also contributes to Weight Watchers' downturn. Weight loss injections such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound, produced by manufacturers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, have substantially altered people's perspectives on weight loss. Particularly in the U.S., and in many other countries, people are swapping these injections for making lifestyle changes. These injections skyrocketed their manufacturers to unparalleled heights - for example, Novo Nordisk briefly became Europe's most valuable company on the stock exchange.
The meteoric rise of weight loss medications is currently tied to manufacturers finally managing to increase production capacity to meet the skyrocketing demand. Until now, the interest in these medications had been somewhat hampered by production shortages. The next step could potentially provide even more momentum - specifically, when the active ingredient is available in pill form, eliminating the need for injections. Eli Lilly plans to launch these pills on the market next year after successful clinical studies in April.
Weight Watchers serves as a testament to the seismic shifts occurring within the weight loss industry. While traditional weight loss programs face adversity, pharmaceutical solutions gain traction and reshape the industry.
