Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan, has been grappling with a smog problem over the past few days. Residents have voiced concerns about the haze engulfing the megacity.

The source of the smog has been traced back to a burning solid waste landfill located on the Almaty-Konayev road. The regional akimat reported this information, highlighting the ongoing issue.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan has taken responsibility for extinguishing the fire at the waste pit near Almaty. However, reaching the sources of the smoldering has proven to be a challenge, as the fire is burning at a great depth.

Samples taken in populated areas within a 35-kilometer radius of the landfill from September 15 to 16 showed excesses of permitted norms for certain substances. Nevertheless, no cases of poisoning or visits to medical institutions were registered from September 15 to 17.

In response to the situation, preventive recommendations have been given to residents, particularly children, the elderly, and those with chronic respiratory system diseases. Monitoring of the air quality continues, depending on wind direction.

On September 17, repeat studies at the same points showed compliance with norms, offering a glimmer of hope that the smog issue may be continuing to improve. The Ministry of Emergency Situations continues its efforts to extinguish the fire at the waste landfill and alleviate the smog problem in Almaty.
