Drinking and Driving Ruins Career for Nong Bua Daeng Hospital Director

The director of Nong Bua Daeng Hospital is heading for an early retirement, thanks to an unfortunate incident that left two men injured. The incident involved Phuttha Samadchai, the district hospital's head, allegedly drunk driving one of the Public Health Ministry's vehicles.

In a surprising turn of events, Phuttha announced on Thursday that he'd be ending his career to deal with impending charges related to drunk driving. Although he still had a year left in office, the accident in Muang district on Wednesday night has derailed his plans.

The collision injured two television cameramen: Aes Eiampha, a 33-year-old from Amarin TV, and Thossawat Inpook, a 35-year-old from Thairath TV. Despite the severe consequences, Phuttha refused to take a breathalyzer test for three hours post-accident. Later, a test revealed an alcohol level of 119 milligrammes per 100 millilitres—far surpassing the legal limit of 50.

The Public Health Ministry needs to endorse Phuttha's retirement plan, which would make him eligible for all state retirement benefits if approved. However, his benefits could be in jeopardy if he's found guilty in the ministry investigation or loses a court case in connection with the charges.

Meanwhile, police at Muang police station are gathering evidence, including witness statements and medical reports of the injured individuals. Despite the ongoing investigation, they haven't pressed charges against Phuttha yet. Interestingly, he was allowed to leave by the police but was transferred to work at the Chaiyaphum's Provincial Public Health Office.

As part of mediation efforts, police are facilitating discussions between Phuttha and the two injured TV crew members regarding compensation. Thossawat demanded 300,000 baht in cash, but Phuttha rejected the deal. The next meeting is scheduled for May 15, with the participation of Aes, who is currently nursing his injuries in a hospital.
