Düsseldorf's Aging Plan: City of 650,000 Aims to Age Well

Düsseldorf, a city of over 650,000 residents, is proactively addressing the needs of its aging population. With around 25% of its citizens over 60, the city has launched an action plan to ensure its older residents can age well, independently, and inclusively.

The city has established a dedicated department within the social department, focusing on aging, care, and social security. This department provides comprehensive advisory services tailored to the older generation.

Düsseldorf operates 32 'centers plus', offering leisure, education, and advisory services to foster social cohesion in neighborhoods. To further support its older residents, the city plans to expand its range of outpatient, part-time, home-based, and low-threshold services. Additionally, a prevention campaign against loneliness and the 'Social Prescribing' concept are set to be introduced.

Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller has emphasized the importance of 'Aging in Düsseldorf', acknowledging the city's responsibility to adapt to demographic changes. By 2035, the number of people aged 70 to 79 is expected to increase by around 28 percent, and by 2045, the number of people aged 80 and over is projected to rise by 27 percent.

Düsseldorf's action plan covers all phases of aging, promoting participation, security, and mobility of its older residents. Through expanded services, advisory departments, and prevention campaigns, the city aims to ensure its older citizens can enjoy a high quality of life well into their later years.
