Elected as a Senator: PML-N's Rana Sanaullah
PTI Candidate Fails to Secure Votes in Senate By-election
In a surprising turn of events, Salma Ijaz, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate, failed to secure any votes in the Senate by-election held on Tuesday. The opposition parties boycotted the polling, leading to Ijaz's defeat.
The election was held to fill the vacancy left by the disqualification of Ejaz Chaudhry, a former PTI Senator. The polling took place at the Punjab Assembly Hall and continued from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Meanwhile, Rana Sanaullah, the Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Political Affairs, secured a resounding victory in the election. Sanaullah, who was the candidate for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), received a total of 250 votes.
The Provincial Election Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharifullah announced the result of the Senate by-election, with Sanaullah surpassing the required votes (181) to win the election with a commanding margin.
Ejaz Chaudhry, the disqualified PTI Senator, filed a petition in the Lahore High Court on September 5, challenging his disqualification following his conviction in the May 9 cases. The petitioner argued that disqualification from the Senate cannot be carried out without granting the right to appeal against the conviction.
The petitioner also contended that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued a notification disqualifying him from his Senate membership without due process. The petitioner further objected to the Senate by-election and termed it illegal.
Interestingly, only one ballot was rejected during the counting process of the Senate by-election, as well as during the initial polling. The ATC ordered the seizure of properties belonging to convicted PTI leaders in a separate case.
The election of Rana Sanaullah as senator is a significant development in Pakistani politics, as he will now play a crucial role in shaping the country's future policies. The exact details of who won the PML-N's Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs seat in the Senate elections on Tuesday are yet to be confirmed, as the search results do not provide this information.
