The Toklas Society: A Support System for Women in the Food and Hospitality Industry
The Toklas Society is a social network and job resource for women pursuing careers in the food and hospitality industry. Established in early 2012 by Sue Chan, EunJean Song, and Alex Pemoulie, the society was created to fill a void in professional empowerment for women in the industry.
With over 500 members, the Toklas Society engages its community through an active Facebook group and in-person events. They aim to provide a support system and resources for its members throughout their careers, helping women find their calling, to ask for promotions, or to start their own companies.
The society aspires to share stories of trailblazing and entrepreneurial women in food and hospitality to motivate and influence new generations. The name Toklas was chosen to represent the underlying force and source of inspiration for other women in the industry, similar to Alice B. Toklas' role in Gertrude Stein's career.
The Toklas Society hosts up to two events per month, featuring women from various sectors of the food and hospitality industry. Event recaps and interviews with featured speakers will be posted on their website for those who cannot attend.
Sue Chan, who currently works at The Toklas Society for Women in Food and Hospitality, took advice from writer Francine du Plessix Gray to be a role model for future generations. Abby Carney, the editor of Edible Queens and a writer for various magazines and websites, including Texas Monthly and The Washington Post, can also be followed on Twitter @abbymcarney.
In addition to networking and events, the Toklas Society plans to create an incubator program that will link entrepreneurs to mentors and resources. They also have a long-term goal to create a scholarship for new food-related businesses. Future plans include offering workshops on topics such as accounting and butchering.
For those interested in joining the Toklas Society, information about the society and the opportunity to sign up for their mailing list can be found on their website. The Toklas Society wants to create a platform to help untold stories of women in the industry be heard, and they invite all women in the food and hospitality industry to join them in their mission.
