Explored a week-long comparison between the Sleep Score on Apple Watch and the Oura Ring, revealing striking differences
In a week-long comparison, I put the sleep tracking capabilities of two popular devices to the test - the Oura Ring and the Apple Watch.
I've been using the Oura Ring 4 for a year to monitor my sleep, and I was intrigued to compare its results with the Apple Watch. The first seven nights of testing revealed some interesting differences.
On the seventh night, the Oura Ring recorded 6 hours 48 minutes of sleep, while the Apple Watch recorded 7 hours 23 minutes. However, the Oura Ring's sleep score was lower for seven consecutive nights, a fact I found surprising.
The Oura Ring takes into account seven different metrics when calculating the sleep score, including REM sleep, Deep sleep, Latency, and Efficiency. On the other hand, Apple bases its sleep score calculation primarily on data collected from the Apple Watch's sensors, which monitor sleep duration, heart rate, and movement.
The Oura Ring's sleep score also takes into account all your sleep, including naps, while Apple's sleep score takes into account sleep duration, number of wake-ups, and proximity to typical bedtime. The sleep score is displayed as a number out of 100 for Apple, and Apple classifies sleep scores on a quality scale: Excellent, High, OK, Low, or Very Low.
The first few nights showed the biggest disparity between the Oura and Apple sleep scores. I did not remember being awake for an hour between 2 and 3 am, but I had a fever and was very restless, which may explain the difference in sleep scores.
It's important to note that it would be unfair to draw conclusions based on just seven nights of testing. Sleep patterns can vary greatly, and a week's worth of data might not provide a complete picture.
In conclusion, both devices have their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to sleep tracking. For a more comprehensive understanding of your sleep, it might be beneficial to use both devices and compare their results over a longer period.
