Fatalities and Injuries in Molezuelas Fire: Update on Volunteer Firefighters
In the ongoing Molezuelas fire that has affected Zamora and León, the latest updates reveal a tragic toll among the volunteer firefighters.
On Thursday morning, a 36-year-old man lost his life in the fire, joining another volunteer firefighter who died in an accident when a fire engine overturned near the fire area. Another firefighter was injured in the same incident and was hospitalized.
In addition to these fatalities, four other volunteers have been seriously injured while combating the wildfires in the area. The exact current medical status of these injured volunteers is not fully detailed, but the injured firefighter from the vehicle accident was rushed to the hospital unconscious.
Two other volunteers, aged 35 and 37, have also died while volunteering in extinguishing the Molezuelas fire.
Currently, three patients are in the Critical Care Unit of the Hospital Río Hortega in Valladolid. An 80-year-old man has 15% burned, an 85-year-old man has 100% burned, and a 56-year-old woman has 48% of her body surface burned. Another 77-year-old woman in the ICU has 10% burned and is in serious condition. A 36-year-old man in the Burn Unit of the same hospital has 50% of his body burned, is in critical condition, and has a "very poor prognosis".
Meanwhile, a 78-year-old man was hospitalized in the Complejo Asistencial Universitario de León with burns on 17% of his body and was transferred to the Burn Unit of the Hospital Universitario de Getafe on Wednesday afternoon.
Regional authorities have expressed their wishes for the recovery of all the injured volunteers and patients. The challenge of coordinating volunteers in fires was recently discussed by Sergio Serrano, highlighting the risks and dedication involved in such operations.
