Fire rekindles at Ponta Delgada Hospital, site of arson attack from a year prior
The HDES hospital, the largest in the Azores, is throwing a party - or more accurately, a commemorative event - to mark the end of an arduous year. In a press release, they've announced a get-together to celebrate the collaborative efforts of institutions and the community, along with the tireless work of their entire team during the fire incident.
High-profile speaker right in our backyard
One of the session's big attractions is the presence of Pedro Ramos, a renowned international expert in Disaster Management. Ramos will be discussing "Disaster Management in a Hospital Environment: Lessons Learned and Future Paths" - a timely and valuable topic given the recent fire.
More than just a speech, the event promises to honor the hospital's staff with an award for their exceptional service. Paula Macedo, the president of HDES's administration council, will also be there, ready to share her insights - but we'll have to wait until Monday for her statement, as she's postponing it until after the ceremony.
A commission for a brighter future
Meanwhile, the Azores Government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) has announced the formation of a commission for analysis and monitoring. Its job is to define the final functional program for the recovery and modernization of HDES. According to Health Minister Monica Seidi, this commission will include representatives from the Medical Association, the Nursing Association, the Engineers Association, government departments, ACSS, and the hospital itself.
One-year ago, we watched HDES burn
On May 4, 2024, HDES fell victim to a devastating fire, ultimately forcing patient transfers to various health units across the Azores, Madeira, and the mainland. The hospital began reopening in phases, with a modular hospital installed next to the main building, serving as the prime target for recovery and modernization works.
Looking back, moving forward
It's been a tough year for everyone involved with HDES, but the hospital has shown incredible resilience. With this event and the formation of the commission for analysis and monitoring, it seems they're ready to turn the page and look towards a brighter future. As we remember the "remarkable" fire, let's hope that the lessons learned will serve them well in the years to come.
