France implements prohibition of smoking in open venues
France Set to Extend Smoking Ban to Outdoor Public Spaces from July 2025
France is taking strides to strengthen its anti-smoking measures, announcing a significant expansion of smoking bans to various outdoor public areas. The new regulations, scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2025, aim to protect young people and eventually create a smoke-free generation by 2040.
The ban will encompass beaches, public gardens, parks, bus shelters, sports facilities, and vicinities of schools and other locations frequented by children, as French Health Minister Catherine Vautrin highlighted the importance of safeguarding children's right to breathe clean air.
Violators of the outdoor smoking ban may face fines of up to €135 (approximately $153) according to Vautrin, with the primary enforcement being handled by regular police. The government also encourages self-regulation among the public to promote a smoke-free environment.
The expanded ban forms part of a broader public health strategy designed to reduce tobacco use across the general population, particularly among youth. The French government has set the ambitious goal of creating a tobacco-free generation, reflecting increased efforts to combat the negative impacts of tobacco consumption.
Smoking will still be permitted in outdoor areas of hospitality establishments, and there are no restrictions on e-cigarettes as of now. However, it's reported that Minister Vautrin plans to restrict both the nicotine content and flavor options in e-cigarettes in an attempt to further discourage tobacco use.
The details of the smoking ban were disclosed in an interview published in the newspaper "Ouest-France" by Vautrin, highlighting France's continued dedication to addressing the harmful effects of tobacco on public health and particularly on its younger generation.

- The French government is also contemplating an expansion of its community policy, considering restricting the nicotine content and flavor options in e-cigarettes to further discourage tobacco use.
- As the French government pushes for a smoke-free generation, it's essential to incorporate employment policies that support mental-health, wellness programs, and therapies-and-treatments for those trying to quit smoking.
- In conjunction with the expanded smoking ban, the French government should invest in science and health-and-wellness programs that emphasize fitness-and-exercise and nutrition to provide a well-rounded approach to improving public health and reducing tobacco use.
