Government reports no fresh anthrax infections

In the northeastern province of Mukdahan, the situation regarding anthrax seems to be stabilizing, with no new cases reported as of yesterday, according to the Public Health Ministry. As it stands, the province has recorded three cases of anthrax, with one unfortunate fatality and two individuals currently hospitalized.

According to the Public Health Minister, Somsak Thepsutin, a total of 636 people have come into contact with the disease in the province. At present, 538 have completed a seven-day quarantine period, while the remaining are still in isolation. The minister emphasized that these individuals were administered the Doxycycline antibiotic. To ensure continued safety, he has instructed the provincial health office to implement rigorous surveillance measures even after the end of the anthrax's incubation period tomorrow.

By closely monitoring the public health situation, the minister hopes to address widespread public anxiety about the spread of anthrax. It is crucial to remember that anthrax typically spreads from infected animals to humans but not from person to person. The virus spore, known for its high resistance, can linger in nature, notably in soil and water, and can cause infections years after incubation.

To combat any potential spread of anthrax, the ministry is working closely with related agencies. The minister encourages the public to eat cooked beef and keep an eye out for disease alerts issued by authorities.

Dr Narong Junkaew, head of Mukdahan's public health office, pointed out that the source of the infection was traced to cows slaughtered on April 12 and April 28. Regrettably, the deceased and the two hospitalized were linked to the first slaughter. As of now, no one has fallen ill due to the second slaughter.

In simpler terms, the current anthrax outbreak in Mukdahan stems from contaminated cattle during religious events. By following health guidelines such as consuming cooked beef and staying informed about alerts, the public can help contain the outbreak. Keep in mind that anthrax does not spread directly from person to person, but it's still important to maintain vigilance.
