Government Shutdown: Sen. Shaheen Urges Bipartisan Solution to Save ACA Subsidies
The government shutdown, now in its seventh day, has not seen direct communication from the Social Security Administration to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., regarding the continuation of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. Shaheen, however, remains committed to finding a bipartisan solution to reopen the government and protect healthcare.
Shaheen has been vocal about the potential consequences of the shutdown. She warned that up to four million people could lose their health insurance if ACA marketplace subsidies are not renewed. In her home state of New Hampshire, Shaheen highlighted the imminent closure of four medical facilities due to spending cuts in the Republican-backed tax and spending bill signed by President Trump.
Despite these challenges, Shaheen has been resolute in her pursuit of a bipartisan path forward. She called for both parties to work together to reopen the government and protect the nation's healthcare system. Shaheen also criticized the Social Security Administration's argument that layoffs are inevitable during a shutdown, noting that federal employee layoffs began before the shutdown itself.
With the shutdown ongoing, Shaheen continues to work with senators from both parties to find common ground and reopen the government. President Trump has expressed willingness to work with Democrats on health care after the government reopens, potentially paving the way for a bipartisan agreement.
