Breastfeeding is a personal experience that is considered worthy of protection by the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center (JPAFHC) and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. These healthcare providers and community advocates aim to help mothers navigate their breastfeeding journey, celebrate their successes, and give their child the healthiest start possible.

Breast milk, a complete source of nourishment designed for each baby's needs, offers numerous benefits for both mother and child. For the baby, optimal nutrition tailored to the baby’s changing needs, easy digestion, and a consistent supply of living nutrients such as probiotics that strengthen the gut microbiome are just a few of the advantages. The baby also benefits from stronger immune protection against infections, enhanced cognitive development, and lifelong health foundations.

Mothers also reap benefits from breastfeeding, including faster postpartum recovery, reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers, possible decreases in postpartum depression rates, stronger emotional bonding with the infant, and economic and environmental benefits.

However, breastfeeding is not without its challenges. It is a learned skill that can initially feel overwhelming, with frequent feedings, latch difficulties, and physical discomfort. Maternal depression or anxiety can negatively impact breastfeeding self-efficacy and lead to early cessation. Many mothers face a lack of consistent support and resources, which affects breastfeeding continuation rates globally.

Programs like WIC play a crucial role in addressing these challenges and promoting successful breastfeeding. They provide prenatal and postnatal breastfeeding education and counseling, access to lactation consultants, breastfeeding supplies such as breast pumps, emotional support, and lower economic barriers by providing free or subsidized breastfeeding resources and formula alternatives if needed.

In summary, breastfeeding has well-established benefits for infant health, maternal well-being, and economic and environmental sustainability. However, challenges such as breastfeeding difficulties and maternal mood issues must be addressed through comprehensive support systems, including programs like WIC that provide education, professional lactation consulting, and practical resources throughout the breastfeeding journey.

JPAFHC's goal is to ensure that every baby receives safe, nourishing care and every mother feels supported in her choices, whether breastfeeding exclusively, combining with formula, or relying on donor milk. The JPAFHC's WIC program offers guidance, tools, and encouragement to mothers on their breastfeeding journey. Pregnant, breastfeeding, or caring for a young child individuals are invited to connect with JPAFHC's WIC program for support throughout their breastfeeding journey.

August is National Breastfeeding Month, a time to celebrate and support mothers on their breastfeeding journey. JPAFHC and WIC's events are about more than just information; they are about creating a supportive environment and building community. A special event was recently hosted by JPAFHC at the Arverne Annex in honor of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, featuring live nutrition demonstrations, easy recipe ideas, giveaways, and fun-packed activities.

Remember, you are not alone on your breastfeeding journey. JPAFHC and WIC are here to help you every step of the way.
