Immigrants Qualify for Healthcare and Social Services Draw in Canada

In a recent development, several immigrants have been recommended for participation in the Express Entry program in the healthcare and social services sector. This sector has been designated a priority category for permanent residence in 2025.

One such individual is Camille Holmes, a 26-year-old from the United Kingdom. Camille's English language proficiency is at CLB level 9 in all abilities, and she does not speak French. Camille completed a secondary school diploma in the UK, followed by a year of work as a hairstylist there. She then pursued a two-year diploma in massage therapy and worked in a wellness clinic for two years while on a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). However, Camille's CRS score may not have been specified, and it is unclear whether it qualified her for the most recent healthcare and social services draw.

Another candidate is Kasun Perera, a 28-year-old from Sri Lanka. Kasun has a CRS score of 481, qualifying him for the most recent healthcare and social services draw. He holds a bachelor's degree in social work, a master's degree in psychology, and CLB level 10 English proficiency. However, Kasun has no Canadian work experience or educational qualifications.

The Canadian immigration authority responsible for recommending Kasun Perera for participation in the Express Entry program is Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), which manages the Express Entry system and holds category-based draws targeting healthcare and social service professionals. In the most recent category-based draw, the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off score was 475.

To qualify for an occupation-based category-based draw, one must have at least six months of continuous full-time work experience in a single occupation within an Express Entry category, or an equivalent amount of part-time work experience, in addition to meeting all other Express Entry requirements.

Salma Tatar, a 27-year-old woman from Algeria, also qualified for the latest healthcare and social services category-based draw with a CRS score of 499. Salma has a PSW program diploma and 2 years of Canadian work experience as a nurse aide. Salma's husband has a bachelor's degree, CLB level 8 English, and 3 years of Canadian work experience. Salma has CLB level 8 English and NCLC Level 7 French language skills.

It is important to note that social work is regulated at the provincial level in Canada. Therefore, if Kasun Perera wishes to continue practicing as a social worker, he must get registered, for example, by meeting requirements set by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) if he wishes to practice in Ontario.

In total, IRCC has issued 5,000 invitations to apply (ITAs) in the healthcare and social service category in 2025. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the healthcare and social services sector in Canada.
