Healthcare Institution Khoo Teck Puat Hospital Praised for Promoting Employee Mental Health in Workplace

In the heart of Singapore, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) is leading the charge on mental well-being. Every Wednesday, at 6pm, Chief Executive Chua Hong Choon steps out for a run with his team, making a statement about prioritizing mental health.

This casual jog is more than just exercise---it's a symbol of an evolving culture. "I have to walk the talk. I have to demonstrate how I look after myself," said Professor Chua, who is also the CEO of Yishun Community Hospital. This attitude is infectious, encouraging others to take care of their mental health without fear of judgment.

At the WorkWell Leaders Awards, Prof Chua won the Wellbeing CEO Award for his efforts in fostering a mentally healthy work environment. Alongside him was Professor Au Wing Lok from the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI), who also focuses on mental well-being at his institute.

Professor Au encourages staff to engage in various programs and activities, such as hiking and dragon-boat rowing, emphasizing the importance of building trust and a supportive environment. "If we have a happy environment, we will have happy staff," he said.

Singapore is not alone in this endeavor. The shipping company Berge Bulk won the Wellbeing Organisation of the Year Award for creating mental health support for not only office staff but also every member on every vessel in its fleet. This exemplifies the growing awareness and commitment to mental well-being across various industries.

Insurers AIA Singapore and Income Insurance, Changi General Hospital, SBS Transit, and healthcare cluster SingHealth are among the top 25 Impact Employers recognized for their leadership in workplace well-being excellence. These organizations understand that mental well-being is more than just programs; it's about creating a culture where mental health is woven into the fabric of daily life.

As Prof Chua notes, "It starts with the leaders accepting that this is our responsibility." By fostering an open dialogue, supporting one another, and making mental well-being a priority, we can transform the mental health landscape and support our teams through the challenges they face.
