Heidekreis Police Train to Catch Drugged Drivers

Heidekreis police conducted a seven-hour training exercise on Thursday morning, focusing on drug recognition in road traffic, particularly sedatives and medications. The operation, led by Commissioner Simon Janz, aimed to protect other road users and catch drivers under the influence.

Held at the Osterheide parking lot on L171, the exercise involved 20 officers gaining practical experience in body test procedures and interrogation techniques. They used initial contact, suspicious behaviour, and vehicle checks to identify potential offenders.

The operation resulted in several offenses, including driving under the influence of sedatives, drunk driving, driving without a license, and weapons law violations. Interestingly, over 90% of offenders were men, with nearly half aged between 25 and 44. Meanwhile, the police reported no significant increase in cannabis use since its legalization in April.

The training exercise has equipped local police with valuable skills in detecting and handling drug-related offenses in road traffic. The operation serves as a reminder for drivers to stay alert and sober while on the road. For local news updates, residents can access a free newsletter.
