Newark's Historic Main Building Undergoes All-Electric Retrofit

In a significant stride towards carbon neutrality, Main Building One at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the first authority building to undergo such a transformation, is undergoing an all-electric retrofit.

This electrification project is being executed by Siemens Energy, with Constellation NewEnergy responsible for carrying out the electrifying updates. The bustling operations base for the Port Authority, home to 190 employees, is undergoing a decarbonization retrofit in 2023.

The first passenger terminal for air travel in the U.S., dedicated by Amelia Earhart at Newark Liberty International Airport in 1935, Main Building One is a challenging structure for the Port Authority. Yet, it is serving as a demonstration of what's possible in the realm of decarbonization.

James Lindberg, senior policy director at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, expressed excitement about the reinvestment and modernization of Main Building One. He acknowledged the need to maintain the distinctive architectural features of historic buildings, stating, "We know how to do it - we just need more of it."

The electrification of Main Building One is a prime candidate for a decarbonization retrofit due to the impending failure of its gas-fueled equipment in 2023. The retrofit includes the installation of heat pumps, electric boilers, and other electrifying updates.

The Port Authority aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, including its entire portfolio of over 1,000 buildings. The retrofit of Main Building One is an example of energy efficiency and decarbonization efforts. It serves as a stage for the decarbonization of the rest of the Port Authority's buildings.

Buildings account for one-third of the nation's carbon pollution. Every building, including the 80,000 structures listed in the National Register of Historic Places, must break up with fossil fuels to align with a cooler climate future. The electrification of Main Building One demonstrates that storied buildings can be electrified while maintaining their vaunted status.

Retrofitting any existing structure is going to be tougher than going with all-electric systems from the start. However, cost-effective electrifying updates are being implemented in Main Building One. The retrofit of Main Building One is a significant step towards the Port Authority's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

James Lindberg's words resonate as we witness this transformation. The reinvestment and modernization of historic buildings like Main Building One are not just exciting, but crucial for our future.
