Hospital administration has undergone a change, with the previous leader once again taking over. Moreover, almost half of the hospital's medical staff are planning to depart.
In a region known for its renowned heart center, the SHG clinic in Volklingen, a significant change has taken place. After years of controversy, the supervisory board made the decision to part ways with Oliver Adolph, the former CEO, in September 2022.
Adolph, who was initially responsible for the site in Merzig and later for the SHG clinic in Volklingen, had been at the centre of a storm of criticism for three years due to a poor working atmosphere. Almost all chief physicians, nurses, senior physicians, and assistant physicians had turned to the chairman of the supervisory board, Landrat Harald Sievers, with complaints.
Since the new leadership with Franz Huber and Oliver Rentzsch took office, peace has returned to the Oberschwabenklinik, with no more complaints about the working atmosphere. However, the situation at the Volklingen clinic has been less successful. Eleven out of 20 senior doctors have resigned this year, and one chief doctor was escorted out of the building after a dispute with Adolph.
Many doctors and nurses attributed the poor working atmosphere directly to Adolph's leadership style. Helmut Isringhaus, former Volklingen chief doctor and FDP Saar's health policy spokesman, believes it's a mistake for Adolph to remain in the management. He believes Adolph's continued presence in the management is not a fresh start, but a transparent attempt to save face - at the expense of the employees.
Despite the controversies, Adolph has not spoken to the press. After his departure from Oberschwabenklinik, he joined Vicondo Healthcare GmbH. The resistance in Merzig against Adolph's continued presence in the management persists, with some questioning whether it is the right move to have him oversee the Merzig clinic in the future.
In a positive note, more nurses have been hired, which is crucial for bed occupancy and economic success. The situation at the Oberschwabenklinik seems to have improved significantly under the new leadership. Further updates on the situation at the SHG clinics in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, or any related workplace issues, are not currently available.
