According to a recent study published in Nature Communications, doctors can make more informed decisions by tracking bacterial evolution in real-time. The study focuses on Staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium carried by 30% of the population that can cause serious infections when it overgrows and becomes resistant to antibiotics.
Study co-author Dr. Stefano Giulieri explained, "By tracking bacterial evolution in real-time, genome sequencing can help us understand the tricks bacteria are using to survive, giving us the power to stay one step ahead."
To test this theory, the researchers analyzed samples from patients whose antibiotic treatments were failing. From these samples, they identified signs of adaptive evolution, meaning the bacteria were picking up traits that would help them survive even with antibiotics present.

While the study has some limitations, such as its small sample size, it offers a "proof of concept" for using evolutionary analyses as a tool for combating antibiotic-resistant infections.
Even though the cost and turnaround time of genomic sequencing are still hurdles, future studies will explore how the framework could best be applied and used in larger patient groups. With ongoing advancements in genomic sequencing and the growing threat of superbugs, this tool could significantly impact clinical decision-making.
"We welcome new technology that can quickly give more precise data so that we can increase confidence in our decisions," said Dr. Quyen Nguyen, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh who was not involved in the research.
