Human Remains Found During Burlington Church Repair Project
A construction project at East Plains United Church in Burlington has taken an unexpected turn. Workers discovered human remains while repairing a walkway leading to the Aldershot Child Care Centre. The church, led by Minister Jan McCormick, has been working with Burlington Paving on the repair.
The incident occurred when a decommissioned oil tank was unearthed between the church building and the cemetery. The tank was removed, revealing soil that contained a partial skull and bones. Further assessment has led to the discovery of more bones. The police and the coroner were called, confirming the remains are old and not from a recent burial.
A Burial Site Assessment is now underway, to be completed by a registered Archaeological Research Company. Meanwhile, the oil tank will be removed, and the soil around it will be tested for contamination. Once the assessment is complete, the hole will be refilled, and the remains will be re-buried with respect. The walkway repair will then continue.
The discovery has brought to light the rich history of the East Plains United Church, which has had a cemetery on its property for at least 182 years. The church is cooperating fully with authorities to ensure the remains are handled appropriately and the repair work can proceed safely.
