These masses, which bless hunters for the systematic killing of wild animals, are seen as incompatible with Christian ethics and send a wrong signal about the preservation of creation.
Hubertus masses are primarily attended by hobby hunters and often mark the beginning of particularly cruel driven and special hunts. The IG Wild beim Wild has condemned these events, stating that celebrating such services glorifies violence and goes against the principles of many churches. The organization has called on church representatives to distance themselves from these masses in the future.
The upcoming Hubertus mass in Hochdorf is organized by the local parish community connected to St. Peter's Church. It will feature natural horn blowers Auerhahn Luzern. However, the IG Wild beim Wild has criticized the event and the responsible persons sharply. Hunting, they argue, does not reduce the number of wild animals but increases births, leading to an increase in the respective wild animal population. Furthermore, according to the Veterinary Association for Animal Protection, up to two-thirds of wild animals do not die immediately during driven hunts, suffering for days before dying.
The IG Wild beim Wild has urged church representatives to reconsider their support for Hubertus masses, highlighting the contradiction between these events and Christian ethics. They have also criticized the upcoming mass in Hochdorf and the responsible persons, emphasizing the cruel nature of driven hunts and the ineffectiveness of hunting as a means of population control.
