Extreme Heatwave Continues Across Germany and Europe

Germany and much of Europe are currently experiencing an extreme heatwave driven by a strong Heat Dome over Europe, with temperatures expected to remain very high—potentially reaching low 40s °C in some regions—through mid to late August 2025[1][2].

The weather forecast indicates continuing very high temperatures and stable hot weather, increasing heat-related risks for health and infrastructure[1][2]. For the remaining week, the country can expect scattered showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the northwest and mountains, but overall, abundant sunshine[1][2].

Health Precautions

Given the prolonged nature of this heatwave, health services urge heightened caution as prolonged heat exposure can cause serious health impacts beyond typical discomfort, including increased mortality[3]. To stay safe during this extreme heatwave, it is essential to:

  • Stay hydrated with plenty of water, avoiding alcohol and caffeine.
  • Limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon heat; seek shade or air-conditioned spaces.
  • Wear light, loose, and breathable clothing, and use sunscreen to protect against UV radiation.
  • Check on vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, young children, and those with chronic illnesses.
  • Be aware of heat-related illnesses (heat exhaustion, heat stroke) symptoms: dizziness, headache, rapid heartbeat, and confusion.
  • Use fans or air conditioning to help maintain body temperature indoors.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity during the hottest part of the day.
  • Follow local health advisories and stay updated on heat alerts.

Wildfire Risks

The extreme heat and ongoing drought conditions also increase wildfire risks particularly in southern and western parts of Europe; authorities may impose fire restrictions, so avoid open flames and use caution[1][2].

Weather Outlook

Meteorologist Jacqueline Kernn from the DWD advises that those who spend a long time outdoors should think about suitable sun protection. The peak of the heat wave in Germany is expected to occur mid-week, with the northwest experiencing high temperatures ranging from 26 to 31 degrees Celsius towards the end of the week[1][2].

In the north and northwest, as well as in the mountains, scattered cumulus clouds are expected during the day on Wednesday, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms again towards the end of the week cannot be ruled out in the mountains[1][2]. Almost the entire country can expect abundant sunshine on Wednesday, but there is an increased risk of heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening in the eastern Bavarian uplands and directly at the Alps on Wednesday[1][2]. Locally, there could be heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds towards the end of the week in the northwest[1][2].

The high temperatures in the northwest will make it difficult to ventilate and cool down, which can affect sleep. Regular fluid intake is advised during prolonged heat[1][2].
