Suicide of The Last Resort Head After Trauma from Sarco Investigation
Leader of a suicide advocacy group takes own life.
In an unexpected turn of events, Florian Willet, president of the thought-provoking Swiss euthanasia organization, The Last Resort, took his own life. The organization announced this sad news, and the Schaffhausen public prosecutor's office confirmed the incident. The authorities were investigating Willet, along with others, for allegedly assisting in suicide.
Willet was arrested back in September 2024, after a 64-year-old American woman with an immune disease perished inside the nitrogen-filled Sarco capsule in Switzerland. Initial suspicions hinted at stratification, but these were later dismissed. Following his arrest, Willet experienced a severe mental health collapse.
The investigations into other suspects continue, according to the public prosecutor's office. Willet's death occurred on May 5, 2025, in Germany. His mental turmoil stemmed from the accusations and detainment, a dire toll on his mental well-being. He was released from custody in December 2024, after approximately 70 days.
Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, provided that helpers have no selfish motives. The country has several suicide assistance organizations, but the Sarco capsule is deemed non-compliant with Swiss laws. It comprises a pod in which an individual lies down and triggers nitrogen introduction by pressing a button, ultimately leading to asphyxiation.
Officials had cautioned the Sarco inventors prior to its usage. The first user was the said American woman. The Zurich Institute of Forensic Medicine's autopsy report, revealed by the public prosecutor's office, did not divulge any details concerning the status of the investigations.
