In Rhein-Kreis Neuss, Germany, a shift in the COVID-19 vaccination strategy has been implemented due to a shortage of BioNTech vaccine doses.

Currently, the number of people hospitalised due to coronavirus infection stands at 24, a decrease from 29 the previous day. The number of confirmed cases in the district is 2,067, a decrease from 2,107 the day before. Regrettably, the number of deaths remains unchanged at 418.

As a response to the vaccine shortage, the district is prioritising the use of available BioNTech doses for high-risk groups such as the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. For minors, pregnant women, and all residents, BioNTech will only be available at the vaccination centre in Hammfeldhalle.

Starting from January 10, all mobile vaccination offers of the Coordinating Covid Vaccination Unit in Rhein-Kreis Neuss will only use the mRNA vaccine from Moderna and the vector vaccine from Johnson & Johnson. These vaccines will also be administered at the vaccination centre in Rhein-Kreis Neuss for minors, pregnant women, and as a rule, for all residents.

Booster vaccinations are possible for all persons aged 12 and above whose second vaccination is three months or longer ago. However, a booster vaccination at the earliest four weeks after the second vaccine dose is only permitted for persons with an expected strongly reduced immune response.

The district's health department encourages residents aged 12 and above to get vaccinated at all offers. A one-night stay voucher for two persons at the Crown Plaza Düsseldorf-Neuss including breakfast is drawn among the donors every month.

Among the currently infected persons in the district, the Delta variant has been detected in 236 cases and the Omicron variant in 137 cases. The 7-day incidence rate of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for the Rhein-Kreis Neuss is 176.5.

It is important to note that there are currently no hotspots in Rhein-Kreis Neuss. The homepage of the district provides a constantly updated overview of all mobile vaccination offers, which can be found at www.rhein-kreis-neuss.de/coronaimpfung.

For detailed, current local policies in Rhein-Kreis Neuss, checking official public health communications from the Rhein-Kreis Neuss health department or the North Rhine-Westphalia state health authorities is recommended, as these adapt rapidly to vaccine supply conditions.

In the wake of the BioNTech vaccine shortage, science and health-and-wellness have become intertwined in Rhein-Kreis Neuss, as the district prioritizes the use of available BioNTech doses for high-risk groups and introduces other vaccines like Moderna and Johnson & Johnson for wider populations. To encourage vaccine uptake, the district's health department offers incentives such as a one-night stay voucher for those who get vaccinated.
