In a recent study conducted by Bitkom, the German digital association, the digital habits of German children have been scrutinised. The survey, involving 1,004 parents, sheds light on the usage of digital devices among children of different ages.

The study reveals that at the tender age of nine, most German children already own a smartphone. While seven-year-olds are also found to use smartphones, ownership typically begins around the age of nine. This early introduction to mobile technology has sparked concerns among experts, who recommend waiting until children reach about 12 to 13 years old, as they are better equipped to understand internet dangers and protect themselves.

The study also highlights the early adoption of other digital devices. By the age of seven, most German children are using a PC or laptop. The trend continues, with eight-year-olds predominantly using tablets.

As children grow older, their digital footprint expands. By the age of eleven, most German children own a smartwatch. From the age of 13, most parents allow their children to set up their own profile in social networks. However, no parents in the survey allow a recognizable social media account with a name or photo for children under the age of 13.

Parents often allow co-use of social networks for children aged 10 to 12. By the age of 16, 80% of parents allow their children to use their own profile on social media. At this age, most restrictions on social media use for teenagers fall away.

The study also explores the reasons behind the purchase of smartwatches for children. Contrary to popular belief, these devices are often bought by parents to monitor their children's whereabouts, not because the children express a desire for them.

Interestingly, the study found that three percent of parents allow an anonymized account for children aged 6 to 9. By the age of 13, only three percent of parents forbid the use of social media. None of the surveyed parents forbid 16 to 18-year-olds from using social media.

The study underscores the need for parents to be mindful of the age at which they introduce digital devices to their children. As children increasingly engage with the digital world, it is crucial for parents to ensure they are equipped to navigate its challenges safely and responsibly.

  1. The early adoption of technology in family health is evident as the study shows that by the age of nine, most German children own a smartphone.
  2. In the realm of health-and-wellness, parents often buy smartwatches for their children, not because the children express a desire for them, but to monitor their whereabouts.
  3. As digital habits of German children grow more integrated into their lifestyle, the study suggests that from the age of 13, most parents allow their children to set up their own profile in social networks for healthier parenting practices.
