Venerable musician and songwriter Marty Cobcroft, diagnosed with Parkinson's disease four years ago, has announced plans to fundraise for Parkinson's NSW with the upcoming release of his new album in early 2023.
The upcoming third album and eighth latest release, titled Free Bird, will see Cobcroft donate 50% of his earnings from single track sales, album streams, and physical sales to the charitable cause. The multi-talented artist, who has been a professional musician since age 15, has been able to channel his music into philanthropy, despite the disease affecting his lower body with tremors, dystonia, and chronic pain.
"I am fortunate that the impact of Parkinson's on my voice and fine motor movements in my hands has been minimal, allowing me to continue playing guitar and keyboards," Cobcroft shared.
Despite the challenges posed by the disease, Cobcroft continues to work diligently, accommodating breaks for mobility and mental health preservation. His routine includes a regimen of morning exercises and regular physiotherapy sessions. "Neglecting self-management would mean enduring abrupt drops in mobility when medications wear off – a situation to be avoided at all costs," he explained.
