Motorcycle accident claims life, Drivers' Association issues statement

In a tragic incident, a motorcycle driving student lost their life in an accident that occurred between Hambrücken and Forst in the Karlsruhe district. The woman was riding a motorcycle when she collided head-on with an oncoming car.

The 59-year-old driver of the oncoming car sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The road between Hambrücken and Forst was closed for several hours due to the accident.

The Driving Instructor Association of Baden-Württemberg expressed their condolences following the accident. Such accidents involving motorcycle driving students are extremely rare, according to the Association.

Ralf Nicolai, the second chairman of the Association, declined to comment on the specifics of the accident. However, he did shed light on the general practices followed by driving instructors in Germany during motorcycle lessons.

Nicolai emphasised the importance of rigorous safety measures and precautions, especially when teaching curve riding. Instructors focus on the use of proper protective gear, detailed instruction on precise control techniques for speed, balance, and body positioning, and gradual skill-building exercises that develop confidence and control through curved paths.

Instructors often use controlled environments with marked cones to simulate curves and practice maneuvering safely at lower speeds before progressing to real road conditions. They teach riders to manage throttle and braking smoothly while maintaining a correct line through the curve, as well as emphasising the importance of looking through the turn and proper body lean.

The Driving Instructor Association follows standardized plans regulated by authorities and also adheres to the practical training guidelines established by TÜV test centres. The sequence and content of lessons are designed to progressively build the rider's skills before allowing them to handle more complex maneuvers, including turns and curves on public roads.

Nicolai pointed out that in case of accidents during lessons, driving schools must document everything meticulously. He also explained that the instructor's intervention capabilities are limited during a motorcycle driving lesson.

Driving instructors in Germany typically prioritise hazard identification, safe positioning on the road, and avoidance of accidents by applying defensive riding principles during curves. In the event of an accident, driving instructors who experience such incidents during their lessons can contact the Driving Instructor Association for support, Nicolai added.

Despite the safety measures in place, motorcycle riding is more dangerous than car driving, according to Nicolai. The Association urges all riders to follow safety guidelines and always wear the appropriate protective gear.
