Opioid overdose reversal nasal spray medicine, Narcan, now available over-the-counter, counteracts opioid-induced respiratory problems and normalizes breathing again.

Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, receives authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for over-the-counter sales.

No more prescriptions needed! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Narcan for over-the-counter (OTC) use in March 2023, making this life-saving medication more accessible than ever. Here's what you should know about this groundbreaking move.

What is Narcan and How Does It Work?

Narcan, also known as naloxone, is a medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose within minutes. opioids engage receptors in your brain and central nervous system to help manage pain, but they can reduce your ability to breathe effectively if overused. An opioid overdose can happen to anyone, including those with opioid use disorder.

Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that blocks and reverses the effects of opioids, restoring normal breathing to someone who's having trouble breathing or has stopped breathing due to an overdose. It comes in three forms: a nasal spray, a prefilled syringe, and an autoinjector. The nasal spray form of Narcan, like the one you're familiar with, is the only FDA-approved OTC option because of its effectiveness.

Breaking Down Barriers

The opioid epidemic is a significant public health concern, with drug overdose being the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. In 2021 alone, there were 106,699 overdose deaths reported, with 80,411 of them involving opioids. The FDA's decision to approve Narcan OTC aims to reduce the chances of fatal overdoses and remove barriers to accessing this vital resource.

Previously, Narcan required a prescription or standing order, which could create delays and limit availability, especially in underserved areas or outside standard pharmacy hours. Now, OTC access means anyone can purchase Narcan directly from a variety of retail outlets, including pharmacies and potentially other retail locations, greatly increasing access.

Empowering the Public

With Narcan more accessible than ever, it is highly encouraged to have it on hand in case of emergencies. You should consider having Narcan if you:

  • Use opioids in any context.
  • Live with someone who uses opioids.
  • Work or volunteer with those at risk of overdose.

It's essential to act quickly during an opioid overdose emergency. Narcan administration can save lives while waiting for medical help. If someone shows signs of overdose, give them Narcan immediately and call 911 or your local emergency hotline for assistance.

The Future of Narcan Access

Multiple factors will affect the timeline for rolling out OTC Narcan, including updating package labeling requirements, establishing an OTC price point, and coordinating distribution to approved merchants. By late summer 2023, Narcan is expected to be available in big-box stores, gas stations, convenience stores, and other retailers, including pharmacies.

Having Narcan widely available at retail outlets like these means more people will be equipped to act rapidly during an opioid overdose emergency. By doing so, we hope to make a meaningful difference in combatting the ongoing opioid epidemic.
