Reflecting on the 90s: Nicole Eggert's Experience as a "Baywatch" Star
Trying to Break Free from the "Baywatch Bimbo" Stereotype
Nicole Eggert alleges that her role in the TV series 'Baywatch' negatively impacted her romantic relationships.
Veteran actress Nicole Eggert shares her thoughts on the stark differences between '90s fame and today's celebrity life during her stint on "Baywatch."
For Eggert, joining the iconic series in 1992 wasn't easy peasy. The former "Baywatch" actress spoke candidly about her time on the hit show during a recent episode of the "Still Here Hollywood" podcast.
Originally meant to appear in a spin-off of "Baywatch" with a "90210"-esque feel, Eggert's role was suddenly reshaped. The spin-off aimed to be "a high school at the beach, training to be lifeguards;" however, the series' immense popularity led to this spin-off being shelved permanently, Eggert disclosed.
The Stigma of "Baywatch Bimbos"
When asked about being part of "the biggest television show in the world" by host Steve Kmetko, Eggert simply responded, "Weird." The negative press the cast faced, which led to being labeled as "Baywatch bimbos," meant that "the casting doors were not opening anymore" for Eggert and other cast members.
Different Times, Different Challenges
On departing from "Baywatch" after two seasons, Eggert felt she was unable to detach herself from the stereotypes created by the show, as she believed that leaving would lead to a fresh start.
"I had some crazy idea in my head that if I left the show, I would be able to detach myself from the stigma that the show had given all of us as actors, which is not a thing," Eggert admitted.
Nicole found herself grappling with this stigma in her personal life too. "People have an idea of who you are, and that could be a number of things. And I think it's harder for people to get to know you without this preconceived notion that they have going in," Eggert explained.
"Baywatch" left an indelible mark on Eggert, who is "not like anyone" she's played onscreen.
In today's world, the challenges faced by celebrities may be different. They now have more control over their public image with the help of social media and better media management.
Navigating the Highs and Lows of Fame
Nicole's career continued to have its ups and downs. After leaving "Baywatch," she returned to the "Baywatch" universe in 2003 for "Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding."
Eggert struggled with body image issues during her time on "Baywatch," reflected in her decision to get breast implants as an 18-year-old. Despite regretting her choice, she had several subsequent breast augmentation surgeries.
In January 2024, Eggert announced her breast cancer diagnosis, prompting her to seek a breast reduction. She discovered the lump during a self-exam in October 2023.
As for the impact of Eggert's experiences on the celebrity landscape, the difference is stark. While Eggert faced numerous challenges related to media scrutiny, stereotypes, and professional setbacks, modern celebrities often enjoy more control over their public image, face fewer career implications from past projects, and have more progressive societal attitudes towards body image and media representation.

- Previously, Eggert faced challenges associated with her image, leading to body image issues that prompted her to get breast implants at 18, a decision she later regretted.
- Now, in the era of health-and-wellness focus, women's health discussions, and medical-condition awareness, Nicole Eggert's experiences stand in stark contrast to those of contemporary celebrities, who often have more control over their public image and face less career repercussions from past projects.
- In the 90s, celebrities like Nicole Eggert faced significant challenges in shedding the stereotypes created by their roles, as evidenced by her attempts to break free from the "Baywatch Bimbo" label.
- Today's entertainment landscape may not be as rife with health concerns and pressures to conform to specific beauty standards, as individuals in the limelight now have more tools and support to manage their image, thanks to social media and improved media management.
