Official Sparks Controversy Removing Sterilization Poster in Russian Clinic
A Ministry of Health official in Sverdlovsk, Mark Itzkovich, sparked controversy after dramatically removing and destroying a poster about sterilization in an Ekaterinburg women's clinic. The incident has drawn criticism from high-ranking officials, including Nina Ostaniina, Chairwoman of the State Duma Committee on Family, Children, and Youth Affairs.
Itzkovich's actions were condemned by Ostaniina, who emphasized the importance of providing information about contraception methods, especially for women facing financial difficulties and raising multiple children. She suggested that limiting access to such information could negatively impact the health and well-being of Russian women. Ostaniina also described Itzkovich's actions as a blunder and unprofessional. The Sverdlovsk Ministry of Health has not yet commented on the incident.
The removal of the sterilization poster has raised questions about access to reproductive health information in Russia. While the incident has gained attention from officials, it remains to be seen whether it will lead to policy changes or further public debate on the issue.
